I selected option A but the correct option reported is option B. The explanation states that as there are clearly two different past actions, the earlier of the two should be in past perfect tense while the later action should be in simple past tense. My concern with this explanation is regarding a point mentioned in SC study guide (4e, page 110) that states that in the case of: Sequence of verbs with the same subject does not require past perfect tense, rather simple past should be used. I applied this logic to the question and observed that the subject in both the actions is T.E. Lawrence and there is also a clear sequence of action: namely he first resisted and then successfully led. Hence I chose option A.
