Pls strategy for retaking the exam in one month

by krissy.angelova Thu Mar 21, 2013 1:26 pm

Hi, I have just took the exam for the second time and scores 560 (42Q,26V). I am determined to get 600+ on my third and last chane in the first week of May. So I would appreciate any tips and suggestions for improvement.
My first attempt was in 2011 (550 (37Q,28V)). Then I decided to postpone the exam and my application. And started learning again a month ago - I had 3 weeks (full time) of preparation and more specificaly:
1 week reading all Manhattan guides (Roadmaps + V+Q)
2 week OG 13 Questions, Drills in Manhattan guides
3 week 4 CAT tests, Strenghtening my weeknesses
My CAT results are:
- GMAT prep 610 (41Q,31V)
- Manhattan 590 (32Q,25V)
- Kaplan 540 (32Q,25V)
- GMAT prep (old) - 580 (35Q, 34V)
I find the vurbal part my weakness and most of all RC Inference and Specific Questions and SC - Rethorical Construction&Logical Predication Questions. On the exam yesterday I had a slight pacing problem - just on this part - I managed to finish on time, but feel in a rush and as i cannot consentrate as always.
I will have another 3 weeks of preparation for my last attempt so please give me some advice what shall i do to get this 50 points that will make my dream come true. I am highly motivated to beat it, but just don't know what to do from now on.

Best wishes!
Kristina

Good work - I know you want more, but you've made really good progress already. :)

The higher you go, the harder it is to go even higher - so 3 weeks may not be enough time.

Next, Practice CATs are really good for (a) figuring out where you're scoring right now, (b) practicing stamina, and (c) analyzing your strengths and weaknesses. The actual act of just taking the exam is NOT so useful for improving / fixing your weaknesses. It's what you do with the test results / between tests that helps you to improve.

For your timing issues:

http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index ... nt-part-1/

Timing, in particular, often takes about 4 to 6 weeks to fix - another reason why you may need more time.

For RC reading:

specific / inference Qs:

For SC, what you describe often comes down to Structure, Meaning, Modifiers and Parallelism. Try the articles linked here:

You can also use the below to analyze your most recent MGMAT CAT(s):

Then (if you'd like) come back here and tell us the results of your analysis and what you think you should do based on that analysis. We'll tell you whether we agree and advise you further. (Note: do share an analysis with us, not just the raw data. Part of getting better is developing your ability to analyze your results - figure out what they mean and what you think you should do about them!)
