Probability & Combinatorics Additional Resources

by mike_bidgoli Wed Jun 10, 2009 12:20 am

Hi folks,

I have gone through the MGMAT word translation guide and studied the Probability & Combinatorics sections. Very good reads. I however still have issues in these subjects and want to further read on them in addition to solving more challenging problems there.

Any recommendations for supplemental resources?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Pre-calculus textbooks usually have chapters on those topics. I used a high-school pre-calculus book (from the Teaching Textbooks curriculum) to review the basics. Then I did the problems from the MGMAT strategy guide to build on the foundation.

You can often find used textbooks and the accompanying student solutions manuals on Amazon.com. Or try a local college library. The sections on triangle trigonometry in a pre-cal book would also serve you well, I think, for the geometry section of the GMAT.

Hope that helps,

I think L. Moss' advice is good; I've used high school and college texts in some cases. It will definitely pay to have a sense of the GMAT scope/difficulty level for such problems before reading outside texts, just to avoid digging deeper than is necessary. Use outside sources to the extent that the problems resemble GMAT problems, and remember that doing more advanced/tricky problems is optional (and possibly unrewarded) practice.
