Profil Evaluation - GMAT/GRE Scores

by snoopyrichie Tue Aug 27, 2013 11:01 pm

Hi,

I recently took the GMAT and got a 690 (Math - 47 - 70%) and Verbal (37 - 82%).

Five years ago, I took the GMAT (Scores are still valid until December) and got a 700 (Math - 47 - 79%) and Verbal (39 - 90%).

Should I retake the GMAT exam? I also have my GRE score from 2010 which was a 580 in Verbal and 750 in Math.

Will the university frown upon scores from five years ago? I can only submit one GMAT score on the application. Which scores should I submit? I chose to retake the exam for fear the universities would frown upon scores from five years ago.

*The official score report will show both GMAT scores.

My background is as follows:

Undergraduate Degree in Civil Engineering: 3.3/4.0 GPA
Masters Degree in Civil Engineering 3.8/4.0 GPA

I have extracurricular and volunteer experience including entrepreneurship endeavors.

I am looking at applying to Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UCLA, with a focus on consulting/entrepreneurship.

Thank you very much for your assistance.

Regards,

Jack

Hi there,

Thanks for your post. One thing I'm not clear on is, do you have any full time work experience or no? Nice academic background, but if no work experience it could be challenging, and you've got some stellar schools on that list!! ;)

As for the score, my view would be that you can report the 700 score if still within the valid timeframe, and if they take a deeper look they'll see all of the scores yes, but at least a 690 is very close to the 700. If very concerned you can always ask the admissions office about a score that is close to the cut off timeframe, but my general view would be if they say 5 years, then 5 years is fine. As for re-taking, 700 is right on that border... certainly a 720+ would be even better, but you also have to weigh how much time you have to aim for another re-take and putting in that effort, vs the time and energy you could put into crafting really strong essays, which may make more of an impact.
