Profile Eval Please, 650 GMAT, Low GPA, Excellent Work Exper

by jgarbis Mon Dec 10, 2007 10:39 pm

Just took the GMAT, got a lower score than I wanted but I want to know what my chances are:

I ended up with a 650 on the GMAT (38/42, 82nd Percentile). I have excellent work experience. I'm an entrepreneur, raised venture capital and have spoken across the country. Actually taught a seminar at Wharton and was a guest speaker at Syracuse. My GPA was very low in college (2.9), I went to Emory. What are my chances at:

NYU
Cornell
Columbia

Thanks!

Here's the thing. High GPAs and GMATs won't get you in, but low GPAs and GMATs can keep you out.

In your case, given your low GPA, you really need a high GMAT to stay competitive. Your GMAT isn't bad (it's at the edges of the middle 80%), but for the schools you mentioned you ideally want above 700 or else the adcom will have a tougher time seeing past your GPA/GMAT combo.

You should re-take the GMAT if you have time. If you don't have the time, then all you can do is submit your apps for the Round 2 deadlines, and hope for the best (it's not impossible, but you are fighting an uphill battle so don't be surprised if you don't get in).
