Profile Evaluation: GMAT 730, 7yrs exp in IT

by MohitJoshi Tue Apr 24, 2012 3:19 pm

Hi, My profile is as follows:
GMAT - 730 (48Q,42V) AWA 6.0
B.E (electrical) CGPA - 2.83/4
12th - 76.4%
10th - 87.8%
7 yrs exp in IT industry - with 5.5 in a single Indian IT company and 1.5 yrs in top multinational (both good brand names).
Have held team/project lead position (though currently in purely technical position).
Though in IT, have worked for Insurance client, so have some exposure to insurance business.
International exposure - 2yrs UK exp, rest in India.
Leadership stories - can provide examples from work about some interesting challenges (though at level of team lead and not purely managerial).
References - can come up with references from previous managers and clients (from India and UK).
Extra curricular - not great, have some examples of event organization in college but not much.
Future aspiration - I would like to move either to sales side of IT/technology business or move in business development area of BFSI in IT business.

I am planning to apply for 2013, so I believe I have some time to work on weak areas. Where should I concentrate more and what options do I have to overcome these?

I would like to apply in top 10-15 colleges only. What are my chances?

Hi! Your GMAT score is strong, and will help your applications to a top-tier MBA program. But schools aren't just looking for strong GMAT scores - they want well-rounded candidates who can offer strong professional experiences, extra-curricular activities where they take on leadership roles and stellar recommendations. I encourage you to seek out professional experiences that highlight your accomplishments, not responsibilities, and also showcase your leadership potential. As for your extra-curricular activities, if you think this is a weak spot, then try to get involved in something now. Relying on activities from college won't be enough - something more current will be looked at more favorably. Lastly, your recommendations are important, and the people writing them should be able to really tell stories about you that bolster your candidacy. Help your recommenders out by giving them a "cheat sheet" of experiences that you would like they to touch on in their letters on your behalf.

Best of luck,

Rachel Beck
