Profile Evaluation

by arun_sfdc Mon Oct 15, 2012 11:12 pm

I am in the process of compiling the list of universities I want to apply to. Please take a look and suggest modifications.

26 yr old Indian male.
Undergrad BE india - 2007 - 83% (confirmed)
Grad School in US(Info Systems @ Carnegie Mellon) - 2008 - 3.6 to 3.8 GPA (waiting for transcript from univ)
GMAT - 730 (Q50, v 39, awa 5/6, ir - 8)
WorkEx(as of Oct 2012) -
3 yrs and 8 months for a leading enterprise software firm at San Francisco.
2 promotions in 3 years
14+ patents filed as engineer.
2 major product enhancements as part-time product manager.
Had interned with the same company/same division in the summer of 2008 and came back upon graduation.

Univ List
1. Harvard
2. Stanford
3. Wharton
4. Kellogg
5. Columbia
6. Yale
7. MIT

The alternative to going to bschool is staying at my current job where I am in line to become a fulltime product manager in 3 months(a popular postMBA option in the West Coast tech world).
Thanks a lot.

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your academic record is very strong, but I have to say that your school list seems ambitious to me. The challenge is that as an engineer, unfortunately, the opportunity to demonstrate business leadership is not as great as for business people. So, I think that is going to be your challenge. Furthermore, I don't see any extracurricular or community activities in your profile, so that is going to be a disadvantage.

I'm not trying to be negative but I do want to offer an honest assessment. I would suggest that you add some safer schools to your list.

Also, something to think about: if you are very happy to go into a product manager role and you are 3 months from attaining that, why do you need business school? Be sure to be thoughtful about this and make sure that you have a strong story here.

Best of luck,
Mili
