Profile Evaluation

by och789 Wed Sep 11, 2013 7:56 pm

Hello,

I recently scored a 740 (48Q, 44V) on the GMAT, and I'm trying to decide among a couple of schools to apply to. I will have 3 years of work experience as an IT management analyst for a government agency in DC by the time I enter business school. I also have a BA in Mathematics from Georgetown University with a 3.6 GPA. I also coached basketball to 8th graders for 3 years while at school. Obviously, it depends on how my essays and the rest of my applications turn out, but what are my chances at schools like Stern, Cornell, and Georgetown? I'm planning to also apply to Wharton and Columbia as reach schools since I want to stay on the east coast and I ultimately want to work toward a career in investment management. Should I stick to those 5 schools or should I replace 1 of the schools (maybe Georgetown or Cornell) with a more safe school like BC?

Thanks!

Hi there,

I think you have a strong profile based on the GMAT, work experience, academics/undergrad, and activities. I think you are pretty much on-target with your schools and reach schools, and like you said a lot will depend on your essays! And those 'personal' factors.

One challenge is that there are a lot of IT applicants, so you'll want to stand out from that crowd as much as you can and show that you are MORE than just an IT expert. So showcase non-technical skills more, think about leadership, teamwork, communication skills, presentation skills, working with diverse groups of people, any of those concepts. Your technical and quant skills are already evident elsewhere in the application.

Good luck and keep us posted!
