Q43 V24 - "LAGGING - READING SKILL" -

by ram.eecha Wed Dec 03, 2014 6:09 am

I had completed the Economist tutor GMAT course now. My present score is Q43 & V29 (90% accuracy in SC).What I got from Economist was the increase in my Quant scores from 30 to 43, and the increase in SC accuracy from 50% to 90%. But I completely lag in my RC and CR. If you had asked me what is your weakness then I would have told you that it is my reading skill.

I lag in "Word problems, CR, and Reading Comprehension".

Please suggest me a definite plan for 700+.

My current status : Completed all of Stacey's RC and CR articles. Completed 3 CR chapters in MGMAT 5th edition. Planning to work on the Foundations guides for a week.

Strategy Guides : I possess MGMAT 5th edition guide. I think 6th edition guides are just released. I do learnt that RC guide was completely revised from the scratch in 6th edition. Should i have to update all my guides ? or only my RC guide ?

My Navigator, online Question banks, and CATs are expired, So I'm planning buy them. But I'm bit confused. Should I buy guides and get the CATS and question bank free, or should I buy them individually online ?

PS : I have some 70+ days for the exam from today.

Thanks
Ram

I believe it's cheaper to buy the guides and then get access to the other stuff along with the guides. I don't know exactly what comes with the guides (I know the CATs do, as well as the Question Bank for each guide). I'd call the office - it might be the case that they will reactivate some of it for free or for a low price. 800.576.GMAT in the US and Canada or 212.721.7400, or send an email to gmat@manhattanprep.com

And, yes, I would work from the 6th edition RC guide - it has been completely re-done. The CR guide was reorganized and streamlined a bit, but I wouldn't recommend replacing the 5th edition if you already have it.

(To anyone else reading this: if you are not having a lot of trouble with RC, you can stick with your existing 5th edition. But if you are struggling with it, I'd go for 6th edition.)

Next, I can't suggest a definite plan for 700+ because there are no guarantees in life. :) To score 700+, though, you are going to need to lift both scores, Q and V. What is your plan for Word Problems? How are you planning to study for quant in general?

Have you read this:
https://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/2014 ... our-score/

If so, then tell me what you think your plan should be and I'll tell you where I agree and disagree. If not, read that and start devising a plan.

The first step:
Read these two articles:
https://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/2013 ... lly-tests/
http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/2013/ ... -the-gmat/
Think about how what you've been doing does and doesn't match up with that and how you may need to change your approach accordingly.

Then, use the below to analyze your most recent MGMAT CATs (this should take you a minimum of 1 hour):
http://tinyurl.com/analyzeyourcats

Based on all of that, figure out your strengths and weaknesses as well as any ideas you have for what you think you should do. Then come back here and tell us; we'll tell you whether we agree and advise you further. (Note: do share an analysis with us, not just the raw data. Part of getting better is developing your ability to analyze your results - figure out what they mean and what you think you should do about them!)

Thanks alot Stacey.

Unfortunately, the test I took recently doesn't gave me a good report.

I just got my MGMAT 6th edition guides in hand :)

Currently, I'm working on Math Foundations guide (in chapter 5). Next, I'm going to work Verbal Foundations guide (esp. Chapter 8 to 14).

I really find the vocabulary list at the end of Verbal foundation guide very helpful, but I'm struggling to bring this preparation part of my schedule.(I recommend Manhattanprep to develop verbal flash cards for gmat)

Completing the above by the mid of next week, I will work on the CR Guide, and CR guide for one more week.

My next full test will be 27/12/2014 (MGMAT-I)

Please comment on my plan. (should I review quants before next full test?)

Your article's fan,
ram :)

That's a good idea! (flash cards for verbal)

You know what's an even better idea? Making your own. :) I recommend making your own even for quant. I think our flash cards are great, but the act of making a flash card yourself is half of the battle - you'll remember a bunch of stuff after taking the time to make the flash card in the first place!

Plus, you'll know that you are making only the flash cards that you actually need yourself.

I like your plan. On the question of whether to review more quant: what are your other quant weaknesses? If you already know other areas are weaknesses, then you might as well review them, too, before you take another CAT. Otherwise, your next CAT will just tell you again that those areas are weaknesses...and you already know that. :)
