Quadratic Equations - Help with Solving for X

by nikkilowy Sun Jan 17, 2010 6:44 pm

I'm having difficulty remembering how to simplify a quadratic equation and solving for x.

For example on page 93 of the Number Properties Guide, In Action question #9, you are given the following equation and asked to solve for x:

x[x-{(5x+6)/x}] = 0.

I'm able to distribute the x and get x^2 - 5x - 6 = 0.

However, I forget the appropriate steps needed to take this equation and get:
(x-6)(x+1) = 0. And mathematically, how do you solve for x?

Thank you!

hey -

for questions like this one - covering some general algebra topic that is in no way specialized for the GMAT - you are better off searching the web.

try googling a term such as "factoring quadratics", and you'll get hundreds, if not thousands, of useful sites.

here's the first hit i got when i tried that search:

go for it.
