quick math question

by jmuduke08 Tue Jun 26, 2012 5:00 pm

i do not have a specific OG problem or anything but was wondering how (the process) to solve for t in this equation:

1/t + 1/(t-10) = 1/12

Thanks!

1/t + 1/(t-10) = 1/12

LHS= 1/t + 1/(t-10)

cross multiply to make the denominator same

(t-10) +t /(t*(t-10))

(2t-10)/(t^2-10t)

LHS=RHS

Hence

(2t-10)/(t^2-10t) = 1/12

cross multiply

24t-120=t^2-10t

taking everything into one side.. in this case LHS to RHS and reversing the sign

t^2-34t+120=0

(t-4)(t-30)=0

hence t=4,30

hope this helps

jmduke, krishnan did a nice job showing the steps but let me know if you'd like me to walk through this a little more slowly and with commentary. :-)
