Rectangle Vs Square

by ashishv Tue May 29, 2012 11:24 pm

Hi,

From the Geometry Question Bank -
Q 6 -
Is quadrilateral ABCD a rectangle?
(1) Line segments AC and BD bisect one another.
(2) Angle ABC is a right angle.

This could be a Square as well so why ans says that 1+2 together is sufficient (C).?

Q 7 - In answer section -
(2) SUFFICIENT: A quadrilateral with four equal sides is by definition a rhombus.

Isn't it incorrect? It could be Square as well?

for question 6:
with statement 1 we can conclude two things :the figure could be either a rectangle or a rhombus so we cant really say whether the quadrilateral is rectangle for sure .so statement one isint sufficient .i am not sure how to draw figures here else i wud have shown how this statement tells that the figure cud be either rectangle or rhombus .but to give u a rough idea .u will find two pair of conguent triangle (coz of two equal sides and including angle )so this gives us two opposite sides as equal and parallel .

with statement 2 we cant really conclude abt rest of the angles and sides

but the moment u combine two statements then we can say for sure that the figure is rectangle .
as to ur question whether it will be a square ...the answer is no coz for that diagonals sud have been equal

also plz note that : in geometry i consider various figures kind of tending to perfect thing ...n outof all quadrilateral square is the most perfect ....so if at any point u have proved any figure as square then it definately will have all preperties of rectangle .in other word all squares are rectangle but converse is not true

as to ur next question :
Q 7 - In answer section -
(2) SUFFICIENT: A quadrilateral with four equal sides is by definition a rhombus.

Isn't it incorrect? It could be Square as well?

the answer is again no a rhombus is not a square coz square has all angles as 90 degree .again a square is more perfect figure than rhombus

hope it answers all !!

actually, that's not the best way. with formulas this straightforward, there is no need to go to some website to "learn" them. just memorize the formulas..
