Short Term/Long Term goals for MBA

by aryan170 Wed Aug 15, 2012 2:02 am

Hi,

Does Business development manager role in a technology company a valid short term goal after MBA or is it too generic? My background is in technical pre-sales.
The above role will help me in using the skills such as strategy development, negotiations, product positioning etc which I'll learn during MBA in my job which eventually will help me to achieve my long term goal of attaining high executive position such as senior VP or president handling worldwide operations of a technology company.

I understand that people might move into business development role without MBA but I think MBA will expedite the process.

Please help me clear my doubts.

Thanks!

Hi,

Going into biz dev in a tech company is a legitimate post-MBA goal, but I do agree that with your tech sales background you could likely transition to that role without an MBA. The adcom might recognize that and conclude that you don't really need a seat in their classroom!

Also think about the path to being an executive at a tech company. Perhaps product marketing would be an alternate route?

You can probably build a strong case either way, as long as you can demonstrate the skill gap between where you stand now and your short term goal, and how business school will fill that gap. Also show that the short term goal logically leads to the long term.

Hope that helps!
