"show that X" OR "show X to be" ?

by TP Sat Oct 11, 2008 2:50 am

Hello,

This might be a trivial question, but do we always need a "that" after
the verb show:

for e.g.:

...recent fossil discoveries in Pakistan show that whales, porpoises and tortoises are more closely related..

OR is it OK for the sentence to read as:

...recent fossil discoveries in Pakistan show whales, porpoises and tortoises to be more closely related..

thanks.

I think use of show is subjunctive so you must use that.

(show noun) or (show that noun verbs)

"Show" doesn't demand the subjunctive. Whether you need "that" or not depends on the sentence.

You can have "show" followed directly by an object noun:
The manager will show the animated film in theater 2.

When there is a new subject-verb pair following the main verb "show," you need a "that" to make noun phrase:
The success of the animated film shows that a market for wholesome entertainment exists.

The main sentence is "The success of the animated film shows something." The entire phrase "that a market for wholesome entertainment exists" IS that something. Without "that" after "shows," there would be some confusion about whether "a market" is the object of "shows" or the subject of "exists."
