(sq root of 5)/4?

by tejal777 Tue Jun 09, 2009 11:43 pm

So i simplified an equation correctly and got (sq root 5)/4 as the value.Problem is the options for the answers are:
(A) 1/3
(B) 1/2
(C) 3/4
(D)7/8
(E) 1
Now what if I have no clue of wat the value of sq root of 5 is?My ans was C because i know sq root of 4 is 2.So sq root of 5 should be a value 2+.I already have the denominator as 4.So C.CLearly the logic is wrong.

You'd have to post the question for us to diagnose the issue correctly.

I suspect there is a twist you overlooked (just for instance: sometimes people solve for x but the question asks for the value of 2x^2 or something), or you made a computation error.

The GMAT will NEVER have you approximate (sqrt(5))/4 = 2.24/4 = 0.56, and offer you the answer 1/2 as the best option. (Exception: when the question uses the word "approximate," in which case you will probably deal with big numbers and be offered integer answers.) If the answer really has a square root in it, the answer choice will too.
