Submit GMAT or GRE?

by kpcrim Wed Sep 19, 2012 5:56 pm

I recently took the GRE on a whim and ended up doing quite well. I am not sure whether I should submit my GRE or GMAT score. Basically, I had a strong overall GMAT score with low quant and a very strong GRE score with exceptional quant.

The details:

GRE

167 Quant (96th percentile)
164 Verbal (93rd percentile)

Converting this to the old system, these scores come out to a Q800 + V650 = 1450 and together equate to a 750 (Q50/V41) on the GMAT (http://www.princetonreview.com/grad/gre-exam-score.aspx).

GMAT

720 Overall
Q43 (64th percentile)
V46 (99th percentile)

The Bottome Line

I know that top 10 business schools favor the GMAT despite accepting both the GMAT and the GRE. That being said, my quant score on the GRE is significantly better than my quant score on the GMAT, and I don't have a particularly lengthy quant background (political science undergrad + law school + currently work in government consulting).

I would greatly appreciate any recommendations as to which score I should submit.

Thank you!

Hi there,

That is an excellent question. Congrats on the high GRE score. Firstly, you'll have to make sure that the programs you are applying to accept the GRE - while many do, there are some top programs that do not.

I can't say I know the "right" answer here. I agree that schools prefer to see the GMAT and likely consider it a better test of what they are seeking in candidates. You could submit the GMAT but then report your GRE score in an optional statement as evidence of your capabilities. That may be the best strategy here, but it's tough to say. Go with your gut... if you're feeling confident after the GRE, maybe it makes sense to retake the GMAT and see if you can boost your quant score?

Just some ideas - sorry that I don't have a definitive answer here.

Good luck,
Mili
