sum of two primes.

by dee8719 Thu Sep 22, 2011 12:51 pm

if x>1 what is the value of integer x?
1.) there are x unique factors of x
2.) sum of x and any prime number larger than x is odd.

please advise how to solve this.

Hi,

Good question!

For statement 1, since x >1, we can have x= 2 and no other values. SUFFICIENT.

For statement 2, x could be 2 or any even number >2, hence not sufficient.

(IMO: The proof that there does not exist an 'x' > 2 which has 'x' unique factors is beyond GMAT's scope, hence if i have to assume or choose, I will go with 'A' :) otherwise also, look at it this way - 'x' can have 'x' factors only if all the numbers from 1 to x, divide 'x' which clearly is not possible for x > 2)
