Taking the GMAT again

by DaveS Sun Mar 02, 2014 4:27 pm

Hello,

I took the GMAT last May and got a score of 580 (25 Verbal and 46 Quant). I should have known I wasn't ready for the test since I got a similar score on my most recent MGMAT and Official GMAC Cat Exam (both taken in May 2013). I thought my low scores were because of a "Bad days" because the week before, I took a different GMAT Cat Exam and got a 640.

Here are my scores in previous MGMAT Cat exams

#6 on 5/14/13 Sore: 580
Quant 40
Verbal 31

#5 on 5/8/13 Score: 640
Quant 45
Verbal 33

#4 on 9/8/12 Score: 520
Quant 24
Verbal 30

#3 on 6/9/12 Score: 670
Quant 46
Verbal 35

In 2 months, I want to take my final GMAT once and for all, and would like to know how MGMAT suggests I study at this point. I realize Verbal needs a drastic improvement and I know I can improve my Quant as well. I reset my OG Archer answers in the hopes that doing all the OG 13 problems would be a good fresh start before taking another CAT exam. I think I need to get back to the basics. I'd greatly appreciate any advice from the MGMAT staff.

Thanks,
David

My first thought: take another practice test. We don't know what things you remember and what things you don't - a practice test will let you know.

My second thought: don't set your test date now. Will you be ready in 2 months? Maybe. But maybe you'll need 3. We don't know your current scoring level (and I also don't know your goal score - what is it?). Figure that out first and work from there.

What study materials do you have? What were your main strengths and weaknesses last time around? Your official quant score was at the higher end of your practice range, but your official verbal score was lower. Any ideas as to why?

Read these two articles:

http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index ... -the-gmat/

Then, after you've taken your practice test, use the below to analyze your most recent MGMAT CAT (this should take you a minimum of 1 hour):

Figure out your strengths and weaknesses as well as what you think you should do based on that analysis. Then come back here and tell us; we'll tell you whether we agree and advise you further. (Note: do share an analysis with us, not just the raw data. Part of getting better is developing your ability to analyze your results - figure out what they mean and what you think you should do about them!)
