There are many examples where modifiers have a different tense compared to the essential clause. Example :
In 2050 - Bezos will fly to mars, a planet that rotates around the sun
Essential clause in blue ---- future tense
Modifier in green ------------ present tense
The problem in this case is the meaning related to the tense used. In your example above, "a planet that rotates around the sun" is something that is
presently true.
Let's apply this to the problem:
The company has just announced that it
will purchase the color-printing division of a rival company, which means that this purchase has not yet been completed. Per the sentence, the purchase is also being made as part of a larger deal, which means that the full deal is
not yet complete.
Saying the "deal that
makes it the largest manufacturer" incorrectly makes it seem like the deal is already complete, introducing ambiguity in the sentence.
