* The European Economic Community exported just under $400

by ghong14 Sat Jun 29, 2013 9:11 pm

The European Economic Community exported just under $400 billion in goods in 1988, sixty percent more than the United states did and nearly twice as much as Japan's exports

A.
B.the United States' and nearly double what the Japanese exports were
C.the United States exported and nearly twice as much as the Japanese did
D.what the United States did and nearly twice as much as Japan's exports.
E.what the United States exported and nearly double the Japanese exports

Not sure how to attack this question. Does anyone have any ideas?

Are there parallelism issues? Or modifier issues? I think there is a COMPARISON issue here, however, not really sure how it definitively eliminates any of the answers.

is this a gmat prep problem?

i am suspicious, because there's no choice here in which the last two elements are adequately parallel. (the only one that comes even close is (c), but that choice still has the issue of "the US" vs. "the Japanese"; it should either be "the US"/"Japan" or "Americans"/"Japanese".)

please provide proof of the source of this problem. if it's really from the gmat prep software (= the only acceptable source in this folder), we'll need a screen shot directly from the software.

if no proof is provided within a week or so, we'll have to kill this thread.
thanks.
