The significance of 2.14 and 3.17

by amtang3 Mon Sep 17, 2012 4:06 pm

Maybe I'm just getting overloaded but I can't remember what the significance of the approximations 2.14 and 3.17. Obviously the numbers are the result of dividing 2 integers but there was something special about them and I can't remember what is was. In fact I was told to think of Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day to remember them.

Can anyone tell me where these numbers come from and why they are important?

most likely, these are the approximations for the square roots of 2 (~1.4) and 3 (~1.7)...

Correct! They can come in handy on geometry problems in particular. The mnemonic mentioned is a good one.
