I am studying using Manhattan prep 8. Quick question from the statement in chapter 3, page 46

The following statement appeared :

The teacher is confident THAT her students mastered the lesson


Then the book went on to say --

When the word THAT appears just after a working verb, THAT acts as a "Re-set" button in the sentence : a new subject-verb - object structure will follow

Correct, because in this example, the second clause doesn't stand alone (at least, not with the "that" at the beginning of it). The first clause would be grammatically complete and independent (The teacher is confident), but it would not have the same complete meaning (confident about what?).
