CBy the end of the decade, the United States petroleum industry’s cost of meeting environmental regulations is projected at ten percent of the price per barrel of refined petroleum.

DTo meet environmental regulations, the cost to the United States petroleum industry is estimated at ten percent of the price per barrel of refined petroleum by the end of the decade.

EIt is estimated that by the end of the decade the cost to the United States petroleum industry of meeting environmental regulations will be ten percent of the price per barrel of refined petroleum.

Hi MGMAT instructors,

In Choice A B C D, it is the cost being estimated whereas in correct choice E, it is the entire sentence ( by the end of decade the cost.....) being estimated. what should be the correct subject of "estimated"?

the main difference among A B C lies with the different placements of the modifier phrase" by the end of the decade". how can we determine/ train ourselves to determine the meaning difference among A, B, and C?

is "Cost of doing" a correct idiom? Or does it have to be "Cost to do"

Also, I feel "industry's" looks very odd to me. Is this possessive form of "industry" acceptable in GMAT?

Thank you in advance!

Sorry I didn't specifiy earlier, I first saw this question from "GMAT Club" website and the original poster claimed the source to be GMAT PREP.

ok.

we need an original citation, though, to make sure that the problem is from the FREE portion of the software.
we can't allow problems from the paid question packs on here, for the same reason why we can't allow OG problems.

so, if you see this problem in the FREE software with your own two eyes and can take a screen shot of it, please post a new thread with that screen shot.

(this problem has no existing threads on the forum-- an observation that leads me to think that it isn't from the free part of the software. just about every problem in the free software is already the subject of extensive discussion.)

thanks.
