Hi,
Can somone please explain what these are and why/how they are used. I have all the guide books...did I miss these somewhere?

Hi.
The 'units digit' is just another name for what you may know as the 'ones digit': the digit that comes after the tens digit, and before the decimal place (or the last digit to the right, if the # is an integer).
