I am confused about which is the conclusion of this statement. "this is why the United States’ GNP far outpaces that of most other countries" or "The United States seems to have adopted a “live to work” attitude. "
Could you help me please?
And could you help explain why "Many other cultures have adopted a “work to live” mentality" supports the conclusion?

Thanks!

Hi, there.

Sorry for the late, and now unsatisfactory, reply.

For arcade questions, we need you to copy the question into your forum post.

I have no way to access the arcade question by number. If you still have it handy, please copy it in here and I'd be happy to help.

Many cultures have adopted a “work to live” mentality when it comes to making decisions about balancing work and personal life. The United States seems to have adopted a “live to work” attitude. Some economists disagree, but this is why the United States’ GNP far outpaces that of most other countries.

Which one of the following is mentioned in support of the main conclusion?

The GNP of the United States far outpaces that of most countries.

Many other cultures have adopted a “work to live” mentality.

Ugh, this is messy. We'd have to call the conclusion

Many cultures have adopted a “work to live” mentality when it comes to making decisions about balancing work and personal life. The United States seems to have adopted a “live to work” attitude. Some economists disagree, but this is why the United States’ GNP far outpaces that of most other countries.

It's an opinion ("seems to"), whereas the last claim about U.S. GNP outpacing that of most other countries is a fact.

CONC: U.S. seems to have a "live to work" attitude
EVIDENCE: U.S. GNP is higher than most other countries

The author has a given economic fact: U.S. GNP is super high relative to other countries.
The author also has a cultural fact: other cultures have a "work to live" mentality

From those two ideas she concludes her interpretation: "The cause of the U.S. having a high GNP must be that the U.S. has a "live to work" mentality"

So we would say the last claim, the economic fact, helped to support the opinionated conclusion, "the US seems to have a "live to work" mentality.

Which one of the following is mentioned in support of the main conclusion?
The GNP of the United States far outpaces that of most countries.
Many other cultures have adopted a “work to live” mentality.

Thank you, but it looks like the correct answer per the Arcade is "Many other cultures have adopted a work to live mentality." Could you please explain the correct answer? Thank you!

Sure thing! Copying the question in again for ease of use:

Many cultures have adopted a “work to live” mentality when it comes to making decisions about balancing work and personal life. The United States seems to have adopted a “live to work” attitude. Some economists disagree, but this is why the United States’ GNP far outpaces that of most other countries.

Which one of the following is mentioned in support of the main conclusion?

The GNP of the United States far outpaces that of most countries.

Many other cultures have adopted a “work to live” mentality.

First step, ID the main conclusion. This argument is trying to prove that the "live to work" attitude is the reason that US GNP far outpaces that of most other countries. Next, the evidence: Other countries are working to live, while those in the US are living to work. In other words, it's the comparison between the living vs. working attitudes that explains the difference in GNP.

Thus, each part of the comparison is mentioned in support of the main conclusion: folks in the US live to work, while many other cultures have adopted a "work to live" mentality.

Hope this helps!
