Anyone Recommend Some Books Explaining Argument Types?

by LeonC641 Wed Apr 03, 2019 9:06 am

Hi All,

How are you all? I am Leon. When I read Manhattan LR book 5th ed these days, in the Ch 2 there is an added content, compared with 4th ed., where different argument types were introduced (conclusion types like predictive, mandate, conditional, facutal, causation...etc). The new Manhattan 5lb Drills also had a section where different argument types were introduced and further introduced what aspects should test-take pay attention to in order to dissect each type of argument.

I found this approach unique and very helpful! I could not find the same sort of content elsewhere. I want to dig deeper into this aspect and have a firm grasp about the characteristics for each type of argument. Does anyone know which books, materials would be helpful for understanding different argument types?

Thanks,
Leon

Hey, Leon.

Yeah, some of us teachers would really prefer to teach LSAT in that style, but we don't have the influence to change it on the biggest curricular level. If you want to send me an email, I can send you a few little pdf things I've made that try to enumerate some common argument types. (ptyrrell@manhattanprep.com)

Thanks, Patrick! I sent you an email. This way of learning LR has helped me incredibly. I believe each inductive argument has a set of evaluation standards. So, a more specific guideline of thinking in relation to the different types of argumentation help me to dissect LR more efficiently.

I found some materials on the internet outside the realm of LSAT. This open course was so far what helped me the most.

Does anyone else also have the same thoughts or knows any learning material which specifically address each type of inductive argument like the one above?
