Inconsistent scores for logical reasoning section

by Dotson525 Wed Jan 12, 2011 9:07 pm

As I continue to take preptests, I've been noticing inconsistent scores within the logical reasoning sections. This occurs within the same preptest (not occuring on a different preptest). My question is: what could be contributing to such performance?

I've compared both sections and do not have a consistent type of question that is incorrect.

Also, how can such inconsistency be avoided?

Thanks,

What you're experiencing is normal for most test-takers. That's because the 2 LR sections are not necessarily of the same difficulty. So typically one will see a higher result in one section than the other. One should also have the feeling that one "just went better, and felt easier."

Another potential issue, and this wouldn't just be true for LR for but for PTs in general. If your earlier sections have lower scores than your later sections, you might benefit from some more warm up. I typically spend 45 mins warming up before any PT. 1 game, 1 passage, and q's 1-10 of an LR section.

Good luck!

Thanks

I will begin to warm up before hand.

Also, I've noticed problems within inference questions. I've reviewed through numerous material, and still manage to get 2-3 questions wrong within a section. Any ideas/words of wisdom?

Keep in mind that weaker is better in the answer choices when working on inference questions. Suppose you're debating between two answer choices, if you feel that they're essentially saying the same thing, the weaker one will always prevail.

Here's a quick example: Suppose you can establish that a country that has crimes must have laws. Compare the following two answer choices as potential inferences.

(A) countries with some crimes have some laws
(B) countries with many crimes have many laws.

Given that weaker is better on inference questions, which one correct?

Looking at the statement, I would believe that A would be correct.

Countries with crimes, must have laws does not state the quantity. Therefore the country could have many crimes but not proportional to the number of laws.

Ex: Country has 15 murders. One law pretains to murder.

Using this example B. would be wrong.
Also I think some is "weaker" than many.

Hope this right

Exactly right. For the most part, some and many are equivalents. Don't ever confuse many with most!

But there is a slight difference. Some = at least one, whereas many = more than one.

Your reasoning for answer choice (A) is exactly right, good work!
