Passage Discussion

by noah Fri May 03, 2013 12:28 pm

P1: Introduction of topic & Possible Theory (probably to be discredited b/c of "some anthropologists..."): some say that cave paintings suggest the artists' culture had a more secure way of life and were done by distinct group of artists

P2: Reasons to not believe theory: paintings were in hard to reach spots

P3: Alternate theory & support: paintings were done to improve hunting, support: content of paintings and footprints suggesting rituals done in front of the paintings

Scale:
Cave paintings tell us that society was more secure and had extra time on its hands
vs.
Cave paintings indicate attempts to affect hunt outcome

I would add that paragraph 2: author doesn't refute the theory, just says that the paintings were not created solely for artistic pleasures.

Paragraph3: says created primarily to improve hunting
