Q1

by dagen.m.downard Sat Jul 13, 2013 2:12 pm

Why is the answer E? I chose B.

Is B wrong because it never explicitly discusses family roles being reexamined and reversed?

E makes sense because, in relation to question 4, the inflexibility of work schedules is the main barrier faced by working parents (lines 12-15).

Thanks!

Hey Dagen,

This is a main idea question, so if you've done a decent passage map, you should be set! Let's go through the answers:

(A) This implies that the passage is about how the situation is getting better. But the passage definitely does not imply (or state) that!

(B) This is wrong for a couple reasons. First off, this implies that the only way to fix the problem would be to revise traditional family roles. But the passage never implies that. In fact, the last sentence says "the labor market remains hostile to parents," which is less an issue of gender roles than of generalize parenting issues. Secondly, even if we could infer this from the passage, it wouldn't be the main idea. The main idea isn't about reversing family roles, but about describing how difficult it is to be a mother in the current labor market.

(C) The passage never says that "single fathers can almost always avoid [disadvantages]." Paragraph two says that "...responsibilities mainly disadvantage women." But this isn't just about "single mothers," but all mothers."

(D) This is the opposite of what the passage says!

(E) CORRECT. This discusses work schedules and how they primarily disadvantage women. Perfect!

Hope that helps!
