Let's consider what the argument is saying:
Orwell read, and encountered storytelling conventions.
These are the devices he was most likely to use.
1984 resembles other books in the futuristic genre.
Conclusion: Not necessarily true that he read futuristic genre.
What's going on here? The author is suggesting that, even though Orwell's book follows conventions like others in the same genre, that this doesn't mean he READ other books in the same genre, because those same conventions were WIDELY used (ie in other genres).
(A) influenced by Gothic --> Gothic. This is not a good fit. Put into the terms of our argument, this would say "influenced by futuristic --> futuristic." This is the opposite of what the author is saying about 1984: that it was NOT influenced by other futuristic novels.
(B) is close, by bringing in "other genres," however it's not a good logical match. Our author believes that 1984 DOES look like novels from other genres...
(C) is totally opposite of what our author is saying
(D) is a good match -- uses conventions of the action drama, but not necessarily influenced by other films in that same genre.
(E) not a match.
