PT42, S3, P2, Q10 - Roy Lichtenstein

by perng.yan Tue Nov 09, 2010 4:38 pm

I know the answer is (A) because above lines 38-43, it says "... his work... displayed an urge to say what was missing from contemporary painting was the depiction of comtemporary life"

But I chose (D) because the lines following 38-43 says "Lichetenstein's work exuded not a jaded cynicism about somsumer culture, but a kind of deliberate naivete.... blah balh... inner sweetness"

so it made me think that maybe he brought up the hot dogs and stuff really to lead to that point about "the emotions that lie at the heart" of his work...

Is it because the emotions part is too far away from lines 38-43 so that the correct answer is FIRST that they depict contemporary life? and then maybe later on it's part of a bigger picture (emotion)? but the question is only asking about the first part which is comtemporary life?

Does that question even make sense? haha.. thanks!!

Your question makes a lot of sense. You're looking at the part about a surface bravado and an inner sweetness.

But if you notice, answer choice (A) comes directly from the lines mentioned in the question stem, whereas answer choice (D) comes from lines 48-51.

The question asked about lines 38-43, and it's best to stick close to the location of the text in question. So even if you were torn between the two answer choices, you should end up at answer choice (A) since it's closer to the text in question.

Does that answer your question?

wait.. but that means that (D) is technically not incorrect..

i guess i was just torn because sometimes the credited response wants you to look at the big picture when concerning the "purpose" of some part that is mentioned... for instance like a "main conclusion" that the author is driving at but didn't explicitly state...

and then other times it wants a smaller scope answer, like here.

i'm not sure how to differentiate between what the questions wants when it's asking an inference question such as this one... please help!

If they ask for the main point, primary purpose of the passage, or title of the passage then go big picture.

Otherwise, stay narrowly drawn to the relevant text. Good question!

I think (D) will be a better answer if it said "suggest there are emotions" lie in RL's work, instead of "suggest the emotions"lie in RL's work, because line 50-51 supports that RL do subtly convey emotions in his works.

However, "automobiles, hot dogs and tale lamps......" are not specific emotions, per se. We can't tell what are "the emotions" lie in his work by merely looking at these object he depicted.

(A) is directly supported by line 35-38. "what was missing......was the depiction of contemporary life".

When asked about the functions of mentioning something (serve to/serve primarily to/to show/indicate that......), always look for the sentences closely precede it or follow it.
