Q13 - Criticism that the press

by b91302310 Thu Sep 16, 2010 9:28 am

From the argument, the following relationship could be inferred:

1) not profit making -->subsidy--> outside control
2) honest journalism --> no subsidy
Contrapositive=> subsidy-->not honest
journalism

To combine 1) and 2):
Not profit making-->subsidy--> not honest
Not profit making-->not honset
Contra-positive=>honest journalism-->profit making

I spent some time on this question because I am not sure about my interpretation of the wording in this series of conditional reasoning. So, does this inference make sense ?

Thanks!

Great job!

Honestly, that's perfect. Each step is exactly right. It's not that yours is the only solution to get through this, but there are no errors in reasoning, notation, or anything else... Great work.

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding how the 2nd conditional relationship would be written as Honest Journalism --> Subsidy... Not having conditional indicators is kind of confusing in that I'm not sure which to place as the Necessary and a Sufficient..

The last sentence says that "no one will subsidize honest journalism."

The word "no" is sometimes used as a conditional trigger. For example:

No slow cars are fun to drive.

Slow Car --> ~Fun to Drive

In this case you could do the same and set up:

Subsidy --> ~Honest Journalism

And by contrapositive:

Honest Journalism --> ~Subsidy

Hope that helps!

Would someone please explain to me how to diagrammed the third and fourth sentence. I'm having trouble with "If the press not profit-making, who would support it?" and "and, with it"

thanks

The stimulus states: "If press were not profit-making, who would support it? The only alternative is subsidy..." This statement, when condensed, really just translates into: "If the press were not profit-making, the only alternative is subsidy", which diagrams into:

~PM --> S

Then this fourth sentence goes on to give details about happens if subsidy occurs (outside control is guaranteed) and this diagrams into:

S --> OC

Combining those two conditional statements gives:
~PM --> S --> OC

Hope this helps!

The press is profit making, and it needs to be to support itself. The only alternative is subsidy with outside control. It can get subsidy for propaganda but not for honest journalism.

(A) No, if its subsidized then it will have outside control, but if not subsidized it still could be controlled.
(B) Subsidized → propaganda, but we don’t know if its not subsidized if it will produce propaganda or not.
(C) Subsidy is an alternative to profit making and it can be one without the other.
(D) Yes. Because if its subsidized then it wont be honest as the passage states, so if its honest then it must be the alternative which is profit making.
(E) No it can be profit making and dishonest.
