Q14

by alyshavmc Sat Jan 30, 2016 10:33 pm

I'm not sure why the answer is B. I understand that it introduces a contrast between narrative painting and narrative photograph. But what is the "peculiar nature of our reponse"?

Thanks in advance for any guidance on this question!

Careful there—the line in 35 is "when we look at a narrative painting" and "when we look at a narrative photograph." That's not contrasting the actual painting and photograph. That's contrasting what happens when WE LOOK AT THEM, i.e., our response. This section (from lines 34 to 42) is entirely about our reaction to photography, and what we believe is real versus what we don't. The only answer choice that gets at this is (B). (E) may be tempting but again, the contrast in the passage is between people's responses, not the art, itself, and also, in (E) "drama" feels off to me, as does "the author's conclusion that...are more like the former." The author does not conclude this.

Hope this helps!

Why is A wrong?

A is wrong because the main conclusion of the passage is that the inescapable truth of the awkward photo session is what gives Cameron's pictures their special quality. This claim is the first line of the third paragraph, not the second paragraph. The discussion of suspension of disbelief in P2 is the setup for this claim.
