Q14

by bridgeas Fri Aug 26, 2016 9:47 pm

I am confused as to why answer choice E would be incorrect. I clearly see why choice B is feasible but fail to see why E is infeasible. My analysis is the following:

E expresses that the author of passage B is more critical of evolutionary psychologists 'motives' than the author of passage A. I suppose that this requires author A being critical at all. But being more critical does not seem to necessitate that A is actually critical, merely less critical. Author B states that evo. psych. is a conspiracy theory so this author unequivocally critical.

B express that author A is more committed to the principles of evo. psych. than author B. Undoubtedly accurate.

Perhaps from the length of my analysis on E it is obvious that B would be correct, but I still feel that E more completely captures the differences between the authors.

Help pls?

Hi bridgeas, good question.

I think the answer to your question hinges on being very specific about the word "motives." Which motive of the evolutionary psychologists does the author of Passage B criticize? The answer is that the author of Passage B does not criticize a motive of the evolutionary psychologists. The author of Passage B does, however, criticize their position (e.g. self interest in propagating one's genes).

That's why answer choice (B) correctly describes a difference in their approach. Passage A utilizes the principle of evolutionary success outlined in the first paragraph, while Passage B argues that there are other explanations other than evolutionary success that might explain altruistic behaviors.

Incorrect Answers
(A) is contradicted. Both passages are interested in examining the logical implications of evolutionary psychology. That's why both passages exist!
(C) is contradicted. Passage B is more interested in exploring nonevolutionary explanations of human behavior.
(D) is out of scope. Passage B is skeptical of evolutionary psychology, not evolutionary theory.
(E) is out of scope. Passage B is skeptical of evolutionary psychology, not the motives of evolutionary psychologists.
