Q15

by trevor.dursky Wed Mar 07, 2012 3:36 pm

I'm not having any trouble with the diagram and I was able to get the other questions under untimed conditions. I still don't understand why B is the correct answer for Q15. Could somebody please explain? Thank you.

I would like to know how you diagrammed this game. This may indicate why you struggled on this question.

This was my initial set up:

I then considered that the SS block placement is very limited and so are the other variables, since only 2 would remain (O and P).

Image

With the first placement, I know with the first placement that O will be on Wednesday.

Image

I have two spots left to place, where at least 1 must be a P. If O is on Th, then P is on Fri. If P is on Th, then O or P could be on F. I show a stacking to indicate the split of what could happen after the certainty of SSO (Mon-Wed).

The next placement would have P on Mon.

Image

We know these last two spots must have at least 1 O. If O is on Th, then P is on Fri. If P is on Thurs, O is on Fri.

These steps are repeated for the final two placements of the SS block.

An important note about the diagram: The third row shows O/P Tues and O/P Fri. I have decided that I can remember that at least one of those guys must be an O. Both could be O, but it could not be true that both are P.

So this is a local question asking us for what could be true if we had another consecutive pairing besides the SS block. As we can tell from this diagram, we have several possibilities. We will go through the answer choices.

A) P on Monday and O on Thursday. Nope. Only one situation like that could occur and no other variables are consecutive.

B) P on Tuesday and S on Wednesday. Yes that can happen. We have one situation where that could occur. We would have to make Fri be an O, but this would work with the consecutive P block being Mon-Tues.

I got a question on the explanation for (A) above.

I actually chose (A) initially since it COULD be true.

While Timmy's explanation above also says (just like what I think) that only one situation like (A) can occur, why can't (A) be the answer for this 'COULD BE TRUE' question?

As everybody knows, unlike Must be True questions, just one case possible can be a correct answer in a question like this --- a Could Be True question. Then, why can't (A) be the answer?

Can anybody further explain the situation in (A) and some more?

Thanks in advance!
