I see what you but mean, but (C) also is about "the majority of experiments," and the passage isn't. We are told about the two explanations and the experiments that support them, but we have no idea if these represent the majority of experiments.
(B) works because while it covers the author's preference for the map sense theory, it also includes his caveat--that it hasn't been satisfactory.
(A) is out of scope.
(D) likewise doesn't reflect the scope of the passage, which is about the two specific explanations and how they are or aren't supported by experimentation.
(E) is not at all what the passage is concerned with.
