I am unsure about question 2. I selected D because lines 30-40 led me to believe more researchers were being attracted because of this new method. I see how E could be the correct answer but could someone explain the whole question?

D is unsupported- it goes to far. Just because a field is changing does not mean that it is attracting an increasing number of researchers. E goes along very nicely with those same lines you listed and it seems the author is happy about this change. It seems that they now recreate ancient process in order to help support various hypothesis, which is not something they did in the past - this is progress in the field.
