Q25

by Nina Mon Nov 19, 2012 7:11 pm

i can persuade myself why c is the correct answer after i checked answer key, but just have some problem eliminating E, which i original chose.
especially since the author mentioned in the second paragraph that although the theory became "gradually accepted", but some scientists still remained "skeptical", until "recently" new evidence has been gathered and thus provide explanation. Thus the wording "presentation of new information that challenges the theory; modification of the theory to accommodate the new information" seem to totally match. Then why is E incorrect?

Thanks for help!

Hey, there.

I agreed with most of what you said, but I wanted to ask you about this:

Nina Wrote: the author mentioned in the second paragraph that although the theory became "gradually accepted", but some scientists still remained "skeptical", until "recently" new evidence has been gathered and thus provide explanation. I agree with your assessment of the passage.

The "recent" new evidence, as you said, helps to ease the scientists' skepticism .. it provides an explanation for the theory.

That's the opposite of new information that challenges the theory. If the new info CHALLENGED the theory, it would be suggesting that the theory is wrong, not providing an explanation for it.

Were you interpreting "challenge" to mean something different?

Let me know if questions remain.

I've got a question about (B). Is B wrong because the "management class" does not necessarily mean the upper class? I kind of assumed that it wasn't too much of a jump.

I definitely see why (E) was right though.

I was really struggling here to figure out why C was correct. I picked E as well, at first, but then I noticed that what lead me to E was my idea that the first idea presented in paragraph one had to be included in the breakdown of the passage. What I mean by that is that, in the first paragraph they discuss what neurobiologists believed at first then they go on to talk about an alternative theory. I was so focused on what was once believed I missed the main point of the passage and ultimately couldn't figure out how it was organized. C is absolutely correct (not because the answer choice tells us haha) but because if you break down each piece of the answer choice it describes it almost perfectly. Part 1: This talks about the "alternative theory" but just says a theory is explained. It's the same thing. Part 2: This refers to the second paragraph and is evident in the first few lines. Part 3: This refers to paragraph 3 as the "new evidence" aka explanation Part 4: This refers to the last paragraph of the passage and refers to the potential benefits from yet another discovery under the same theory and how this additional discovery can be put to use to further benefit those plagued by certain diseases. I hope this helps! :D
