Q26

by opulence2001 Fri Dec 17, 2010 7:26 pm

Hello,

I fell for answer B for this question because of line 31 describes the tenacious hold of Dexter's theory. However the answer is A, which is quite the opposite. I am definitely missing something...I'm not seeing exactly where the undermining of Dexter's argument happens.

Line 31 comes from the wrong part of the passage -- before the "new publications" were mentioned. Yes, Dexter's theory had a tenacious hold.... until: third paragraph.

The recent publications have exposed the concept just described as "simplistic and unsophisticated" because it was based "solely on one factor." New scholarship presents a "much more complicated picture." Etc, etc, etc.

The passage is very supportive of Dexter until the paragraph in question. The purpose of this whole paragraph, though, is to criticize Dexter and related ideas.

but isn't the question talking about the publication mentioned in line 41 instead of the recent scholarship mentioned in 48?

Hey Guys,

The publications mentioned in paragraph 3 are said to have "exposed the concept of a decline in status [Dexter's concept] as simplistic and unsophisticated." This matches perfectly with answer (A).

(B) Quite the opposite. The whole point is that the theory is not tenacious anymore, because it's been debunked.

(C) Again, this is the opposite of what we want. Wilson agreed with Dexter, more or less.

(D) This is tricky. But the issue isn't that women's status didn't change, only that their status didn't represent some kind of "golden age."

(E) This is similar to (A) and (B), in that it's the opposite of what we want.

Hope that helps!
