I got answer D.

is my reasoning below correct.

A) passage doesn't talk about slow and steady increase
B) Passage does not iridium and sea levels have a causal relationship
C) unsupported.
D) supported by lines 44-46
E) unsupported

I think A is also wrong because of "early C' period",
