Q5

by kmewmewblue Fri Nov 18, 2011 1:35 am

I am confused about the grammar on answer (C).

So,

Subject: the danger(involved in working on offshore platforms)
Verb: make(their elimination)
Object: a desirable goal

Even I parse these, I don't understand exactly what they are saying.
First of all, what is "their elimination"? "their"=danger?

I could guess "Eliminating the danger is a desirable goal," but this wording is kind of hard for me to understand and at the real test, I can't distinguish this is a tricky answer choice or not.

Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks

I agree--weird wording here. But as a general rule of thumb for when you're stuck, if you see a "their" (or "its"), it is typically referring to the thing (noun) closest to it and preceding it. So for example in this case, you have 2 options: dangers and platforms. Platforms is closer.

Even better, it's a good idea to go back to the passage to see which makes more sense--does it talk about eliminating dangers or platforms? Ah, line 10--platforms.

Hope this helps...
