Hey, there.
This question stem isn't asking us to find an answer choice that is supported by the passage.
It's asking us to find an answer choice that supports the passage.
Just as it is in Logical Reasoning, in Reading Comp, when a question stem says "which of the following, if true (if valid, if assumed) ...", the answer choices are all new ideas. We don't have to analyze them based on whether they were covered in the passage or argument.
We're supposed to analyze them based on whether they perform the function stipulated by the question stem.
This question stem wants us to Strengthen the claim that "Mexican mural painting was more than merely the result of the changes in political and social awareness that the Mexican Revolution represented; it also reflected important innovations in the art world."
In particular, what does this claim say about the relationship between muralism and the Mexican Revolution? It's saying that muralism had purposes and inspiration that went beyond reflecting the Mexican Revolution (similar to what's said in the topic sentence of this paragraph, lines 21-24).
We just have to judge each answer by whether or not it would strengthen this claim.
A) strengthens because if the muralists created works that were "deliberately not political", that bolsters the idea that "mural painting was more than merely the result of the changes in political and social awareness". This answer also nicely reinforces the nearby context, lines 21-24.
B) weakens the claim in question, since lines 24-27 maintained that muralists were reflecting important innovations.
C) is irrelevant to the claim. (C) tells us that the innovations in the art world were really revivals of older ideas, but it doesn't give us anything relating to how connected muralism was to the Mexican Revolution.
D) is somewhat tempting but ultimately irrelevant. We don't really care whether or not govt. officials were familiar with art innovations. We care whether muralists were familiar with art innovations and whether the muralists used them to go beyond simply representing the Mexican Revolution.
E) weakens the claim. It makes muralism and the Mexican Revolution go MORE hand-in-hand, when we're trying to strengthen the idea that muralism went beyond the Mexican Revolution.
Strengthen, Weaken, and Most Analogous questions are the three main types of RC questions that will give you answer choices that are all new ideas. Because of that, they're among my least favorite. I like being able to prove/disprove my RC answers based on whether or not they're supported by the passage. However, for these three aforementioned question types, the test is asking us to judge how NEW ideas relate to the ideas in the passage.
Luckily (for me), they are fairly uncommon as question types.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have lingering questions.
