Q7

I really struggle with these types of questions unless I get lucky and recall quite clearly if this particular answer choice was or was not mentioned. Do you know any faster way to proceed with these types of questions, especially on a passage you found somewhat confusing to understand? Otherwise it seems like it is really time consuming, especially when it is for a dual passage where you need to search both passages. I have outlined on review how I got rid of each answer choice but it would take a lot of time to go through each passage to do it when it is timed and seems better to just skip it unless you recall the passage well and can eliminate at least 3 choices.

Eliminating the Choices:

A) Passage A around lines 23-30 but in general we are talking about muscles when re-training. Passage B Line 41 and Line 60. Also in general this seems like what both passages are concercned with anyways

B) Passage A: Entire P2 is on this adaptation. Passage B: Line 46, and lines 55-61 is all about adaption after a work out

C) Passage B does not give a % for muscle fiber (Lines 56 refers to a different % regarding muscle atrophy )

D) I thought this was the answer intially because recall Q2's credited response said that B uses a result of a scientific experiments to make a point whereas A does not. However, A does mention scientific publications in line 4 where it says no prior publications talks about muscle memory ; hence the prevalence is 0 in Passage A and prevalence of research in B is given when it says "prior research" on line 44-45. In other words, both passages discuss prevalence but somewhat disagree on the prevalence. .

E) Passage B talks about protein in its last paragraph such as on line 60. However, A does not. A talks about muscle fibers and neurons; not proteins. CORRECT ANSWER since B talks about it and A does not.

When we're reading Psg B, we want to have a mindset similar to that we use in LR on ID the Disagreement questions:

"Where do these two things overlap? Where do they diverge?"

I'm assuming you DO already have that mindset, but sometimes by looking actively for overlaps and differences you might notice, during reading, what the eventual correct answer to this will be.

But I think more often they are just annoying granular differences, so they're NOT the sort of thing we'd expect ourselves to get without looking back.

One technique that could assist, but is pretty drastic, is to take a minute once you're done reading Psg A and make some eliminations on "Both authors would say ___" questions and on "Which is ..... not mentioned in A?"

After having just read A, we'd be able to say that
(A), (B), (C), and (D) sound familiar.

Protein, meanwhile, sounds very UN-familiar.

So in this case, we have a great head start on the correct answer. I wouldn't normally expect this technique to be THIS effective, but there would always be at least a couple answer choices that WERE brought up in (A), and with (A) fresh in our ears/minds, we should be able to eliminate those pretty quickly (or at least squiggle them as probably wrong).

Since the big gap between these two passages was HOW they explain muscle memory, and Psg B's explanation involved needing more than one nucleus in order to make enough protein, this correct answer IS actually adjacent to the big difference we should know between Psg A and Psg B.

But we'd obviously be more inclined to pick the answer quickly if it mentioned "more than one nuclei" or "apoptosis" or something like that.

Could you explain further how C is mentioned in both? is muscle atrophy suppose to logically be interpreted as fibers?

Good question. Choice (C) is not mentioned in both passages. It is mentioned in the second paragraph of Passage A but is not mentioned in Passage B. We would not interpret atrophy to necessarily mean something about muscle fibers or a percentage of muscle fibers. So, choice (C) is incorrect because it's the opposite of what we want. The question asks for the answer choice that is mentioned in Passage B, but not mentioned in Passage A.
