Q9

by Shiggins Sun Nov 27, 2011 5:09 pm

For this choice I just eliminated what I believed were bad choices

Choices B & E, Are the opposite of lines 35 in passage B

Choice D. I felt was not in the writing, both authors appear to want to incorporate it in.

With A and C I sorta guessed. Subversion I believe means to subdue and I do not believe there is any authoritative stance in the writing of either profession.

I was left with choice A, I believe choice abstraction can be synonymous for formulaic. Both passages discuss a formulaic approach Passage A line 9, Passage B line 35 by a linear logic

If anyone could help clarify this, much appreciated

This seems like a great approach you employed. Nicely done.

This is an identification question, so we should expect to see the answer in each passage. And we do! "Abstract" is found in lines 10 and 49, and is used in both places to describe typical writing in the respective author's profession.

I picked (D) over (A).

What makes (A) a better answer than (D)?

I found the word "narrative" in both passages and I thought they were not so fond of narrative writing in their professions.

Thanks in advance!

I think you should try re-reading those passages. It seems like you may have come away with a distorted interpretation.

Both authors are complaining about the dry, formal, stuffy, abstract writing that is typical in their professions. (This is the problem both authors are bringing up).

The potential REMEDY being considered is an effort to inject more narrative into the writing.

So both authors have a positive view toward narrative, because it is the counterpoint to the dry, formal, stuffy, boring writing they're complaining about.

You may have picked up some negative tone concerning narrative at the end of each passage, but it was actually the authors being pessimistic about whether the writers in their field will ACTUALLY embrace more narrative in their writing or whether the currently fashionable call for narrative will just be a passing fad and the boring writing will continue.
