Question 1891

by ash Wed Oct 30, 2013 1:03 am

Q. The women's professional tennis ranking system counts only a player's best 16 results in the previous 52-week period. While it is true that this system helps to minimize injuries due to excessive play, this system also unfairly rewards those players who play many more tournaments than the minimum 16. Those players will be able to drop all of their worst results.

Which of the following is mentioned as an opposing point to the main conclusion?

a. It is more important to implement a system that minimizes injury than it is to establish a system that fairly assigns rankings.
b. One consequence of the current ranking system is that it helps to minimize injuries caused by excessive play.

What is the main conclusion? And what is the rational in the answer?
(the answer is b)

Thank you in advance!

Hey Ash,

I see your confusion here. I don't think it's a perfectly written question, given that the "opposing point" doesn't really relate directly to the actual conclusion (though it does have opposing spin).

The conclusion is that the system is unfair.

If we generalize out to the conclusion being that the system is bad, then the opposing point would be anything that suggests the system is good.

Answer choice (B) suggests that the system is good.

Hope that helps!
