Since 1975 so many people

by agendra1003 Sat Sep 05, 2009 10:19 am

Since 1975 so many people have been moving to Utah such that Mormons who were once 75 percent of the population are now only accounting for half of it.

A. so many people have been moving to Utah such that Mormons who were once 75 percent of the population are now only accounting for half of it

B. many people have been moving to Utah, so Mormons once 75 percent of the population are now accounting for only half

C. that many people have been moving to Utah, such that the Mormons that were once 75 percent of the population are now accounting for only half of it

D. many people have been moving to Utah such that the Mormons, who once represented 75 percent of the population, now only account for half

E. so many people have been moving to Utah that the Mormons, who once represented 75 percent of the population, now account for only half

Please explain every answer choice.
What's the difference btw 'many people' and 'so many people'

OA : E....I picked D

A) Such that Mormons, who were once 75% of the population : Mornons should either account for or represent 75% of the population. Saying Mormons are 75% of the population is not logical meaning to me

B) Same meaning error. Plus the construction since X, so Y seems akward to me.

C) same meaning error. Plus the construction "since that....such that" is akward

D) Corrects the meaning error(...Mormons, who once represented 75% of the population). But incorrectly uses the construction "Since X that Y". The construction should be " So X that Y"

E) E corrects both the meaning and construction error

Hope the answer is E. I struggled debating between D and E. Some body please chip in on this. This is my first time coming across the construction "Since X that Y" so I'm not 100% sure it's wrong

i don't really understand what you mean by "please explain every answer choice", so i'll just highlight some of the most important parts of the problem.

A. so many people have been moving to Utah such that Mormons who were once 75 percent of the population are now only accounting for half of it

* "so many ... such that" is an incorrect idiom.
the correct idiom is "so ADJ ... that", and is used to emphasize the unusual extent of ADJ. (in this case, ADJ is "many".)

B. many people have been moving to Utah, so Mormons once 75 percent of the population are now accounting for only half

* you need commas around the appositive modifier ("once 75 percent of the population").

* "are now accounting for" is bulky and unnecessary (especially vs. "account for" in the other choices).

C. that many people have been moving to Utah, such that the Mormons that were once 75 percent of the population are now accounting for only half of it

* most obvious problem: you can't use "which" for people.

* the "that" at the beginning is ungrammatical.

* "such that" doesn't make sense.
in fact, i don't think you should pick a sentence with "such that" in one piece. if anyone can prove me wrong on this, please do.
the ONLY non-awkward, correct sentences i've seen with "such that" are sentences about math or physics (e.g., "choose x and y such that x + y = 10").

D. many people have been moving to Utah such that the Mormons, who once represented 75 percent of the population, now only account for half

* same problem with "such that".

* "only" is misplaced. the purpose is to show that 1/2 is a smaller fraction than before, so "only" should be placed directly before "half".

E. so many people have been moving to Utah that the Mormons, who once represented 75 percent of the population, now account for only half

correct.

* it's idiomatic "so many ... that"

* and everything else is ok, too.

Hi Ron,

There is a problem in OG 12 with "such.. that". Cannot post it here but it is #6 -> "In late 1997.... growing on walls."

All the answer choices contain such that so we do not have to actually have to eliminate based on that but read this question and remembered this post so thought would put it up for reference :)

Thanks,
Priya

sorry, perhaps i should have been more specific -- i meant that
i would be suspicious of any sentence that has "such that" IN ONE PIECE.

"such NOUN that" is a perfectly respectable construction in formal english.

I want to ask the usage of such that.
en from longman
A rule of correspondence between two sets such that there is a unique element in the second set assigned to each element in the first set. (such refers toa rule of ... sets )

I need some one validate my idea
I think this example from longman explain why such that is wrong in all choice. it needs to explain the nearest noun.
right?

and I also want to ask what is difference about such... that ,compared with such that

thanks

hi,

I have 1 question regarding choices a,b and c.
Can't we rule them out simply because they compare THE MORMONS to a PERCENTAGE ?

Shoudn't it be "mormons that once accounted for " or something of that sort instead of a direct comparison with percentage

The MORMONS are not compared to but they actually WERE the "75 percent of the population" and not just the 75percent -- without the prepositional modifier.

Hi Instructors ,

I have one doubt.
The correct option E ends as "now account for only half".
How writing only half is sufficient here.
As per my understanding we should write like "half of the population".Kindly explain how it is sufficient just to write half.

Ron, can I summarize:

SO ADJECTIVE THAT , we need ADJECTIVE in between

SUCH NOUN THAT, we need NOUN in between

SUCH THAT, SO, we do not need ANY THING in between.

if possible, pls, Ron, give us example for each kind above.

there is a direct comparison with "75% of the population" in the immediately preceding construction. therefore, it is understood that the second fraction/percentage is also "of the population". if these things are the same, you don't have to keep spelling them out every time.

as another example:
ten percent of the workers were on vacation; another twenty percent were sick.

i don't understand what you are asking, but the answer is probably contained somewhere in the following epically long post:

Ron, pls, help- I still do not understand your reason to refuse "such that" in C and D.
